FOX AT BAY

George Abercrombie Fox was born in London on a rainy day in 1765. He was only ten when he joined the Royal Navy as a "powder monkey" and tasted the irresistible lure of the sea. By eighteen he was a lieutenant with a reputation for hard, driving seamanship. The years on deck hardened the man, the seas salted his wounds. For Fox it became a matter of battle and survival, against all odds. He asked no quarter, gave no mercy.

It is now 1800 and Fox is at war for England. But no matter, for Fox has always been at war. No man could cross his path without paying dues in blood. This is a man who lives only for the thrill of using the cannon and sword.

Come aboard, if you dare, for a hellish ride on a violent ship of war—with Fox

FOX IS NOT THE NOBLE HERO OF TRADITIONAL FICTION. FOX IS A FIGHTING MAN WHO TRANSCENDS HEROISM — HE DOESN’T CARE HOW HE WINS AS LONG AS HE WINS. HE’S MEAN, CUNNING AND MOST VICIOUS WHEN TRAPPED. THERE’S NO WAY TO OUTFOX FOX!

Adam Hardy was a pen name used by Kenneth Bulmer (1921-2005). A prolific writer, Bulmer wrote over 160 novels and many short stories, both under his real name and various pen names. He is best known for science fiction, including his long-running Dray Prescot series of planetary romances, but he wrote in many genres.

The Press Gang Fox Book 2 edition by Adam Hardy Literature Fiction eBooks

This second novel in the series starts when George Abercrombie Fox is a second lieutenant in the British navy. There is a good deal of naval action and battles at sea which are very well described. The life of the men in the navy at that time is well done with a bit of emphasis on the press gang tactics used to secure men to man the ships.

I enjoyed the first book in the series, "The Powder Monkey", and was anxious to see how an illiterate 12 year old boy, the lowest of the crew members, could rise to the lofty goal of officer in the British Navy. I didn't see any of that. Some twenty years have gone by since the end of the first novel and the start of this novel and Fox is a second lieutenant. There are not even any flashbacks except for brief mentions of Fox's mentor, Culbert.

Fox is a brilliantly capable naval officer, his superiors are all pretentious fools. They will hide below decks during the fighting and then emerge when victory is assured to received the plaudits and promotion due them for their great triumph while Fox receives no recognition. This all gets a bit tedious. I enjoyed George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman Papers" .series in which Harry Paget Flashman is an anti hero who pulls the wool over everyone's eyes to be proclaimed a hero over and over again. That series was written with an intent to humor. I see nothing uplifting or humorous in this series where fools are rewarded and honest and brave men receive nothing but scorn.

The Press Gang Fox Book 2 edition by Adam Hardy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have red 15 books on Fox. They describe very well the condition in the Royal Navy at the time and as explained in the first book, Fox became at early age a fighter, which continuous in all the Fox books.
Every 100 pages in this series will cost you three dollars. Not a good deal. Don't start. I dropped it after reading two of the books; plus there is a 10+ years gap between book one and book two - very weird and unsatisfying.
Although Hardy's book was published decades ago, it has stood the test of time. Press Gang, the first in a series, is charged full of raw action and spot-on authenticity. Hardy has done a masterful job researching this fascinating time in English History.

Lieutenant Fox, a hardened veteran in the Royal Navy, navigates the blind favoritism of the British aristocracy, the grandstanding of inept superiors, and the unrelenting struggle against Napoleon.

Fox’s heroism is darker, more cerebral. His standards are tough—scathing. He is a hero whose actions take him on a fascinating journey at a desperate time. I'm hooked. I can't wait to read the next in the series—Prize Money.

If you enjoyed either the Captain Jack Aubrey series, Master and Commander, or the Horatio Hornblower series, you are sure to find Lieutenant Fox good fun.
The story lines in the Fox books are good and entertaining. The reality is they are not books. They are more like chapters in a book which then makes the price of the whole book gigantic. I will probably buy one or two more but no more.
I enjoyed No.1 so much, I ordered Nos. 2 &3 before finishing. I assumed No.2 would pick up where 1 left off, with Fox as a 14 year old powder monkey. However as No.2 (The Press Gang) starts he is a Second Lieutenant, with 22 years at sea. Whether this time frame gets filled in in future books I don't know. Still, all in all a fun read. Kind of short and at about $8 a book don't know if I'll buy all 14.
The second book in this series continues the chronology, although skipping over Fox's entire career as midshipman and frigate lieutenant, which was a disappointment but may be made up by more books ahead as a Captain. As a lowly lieutenant on a ship-of-the-line with an aristocratic captain and officers he endures life as a loner that the men respect. the ways the press-gang are major events in the book are not to be divulged by this reviewer. Suffice it to say you won't be disappointed and will agree Press Gang is a worthy title to this entry in the series!
Entertaining adventure story, but gets a little depressing. If GA Fox didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all. Forgive the generality of the review but it has been quite a while since I read this book, and it tends to blend in with the others in the series. Worth the price, but the Duty and Destiny series by Andrew Wareham is much better, and free to boot. My biggest gripe is that it seems like there is a book (or maybe two or three) missing between this volume and the first one. It seems like 20+ years passed between the two. How did he rise from midshipman to lieutenant? What adventures did he have during that period? Only hinted at.
